The Jewish History of Berlin

The history of Jews in Berlin is as old as the city itself documents and tombstones from the 13th Century are the oldest evidence of a Jewish community in this place. But until the early modern period, Jews were expelled again from Berlin and Brandenburg. The foundation of the modern Jewish community in Berlin is well back 330 years.

The official founding date of the Jewish community in Berlin is the 10/09/1671. Even the darkest chapter of German history is inextricably linked with Berlin. The Shoah, the expulsion and extermination of European Jews by the Nazis, this was planned, organized and managed.

Today, many monuments and memorials to remember the history of Judaism in this city. Rebuilt synagogues and cemeteries, new meeting places in the city attest to a revival of this story. But there are also memorials to the Holocaust, which should be an occasion that the history never repeats.
